Firelight

Firelight I

Listen to the song

Come carve our names among all the lovers lit by the flames in the big house in the cedars. Wide porch creaking with chairs of wicker, full of skirst and jeans that's where I hold you. Kissin cousins in the big pane window, cedar living room dark floor all scuffed by shoes, huge hearth lights up the beat-up sofa spread with indian shawls that's where I kiss you. Later on pull a shawl around your shoulders and take my hand. Later on, kisses come up you someone upstairs bangs on a drum, one dog farts and the fire pops. Later on the boys and girls crowd on this couch and sing with the furious mandolin strummer

Come to the stream flowing to the city where the generations are weeping. We see them moving our shapes keep flickering on the dark walls and we want to just live and let be

Put your arms round me let me travel up you in the land of firelight gliding like a canoe. Circle knowing as the wind keeps blowing, and in our eyes see me laugh with you. Later tell me as we lie skin to skin how to hold you when you're frail as a child, how to hold you in our corner where we've fallen to the place called you and I. Later on pull a shawl around your shoulders and take my hand. Later on we will walk on the ridge, see the fog ride the redwoods, look up the coast can we hold hands and know this will live? Later on the boys and girls crowd on this couch and burn for the furious mandolin strummer

Santa Cruz

Listen to the song:

Got to get myself to Santa Cruz wake up in the morning next to you telling you I finally have come through got to get myself to Santa Cruz. Drive all night is all that I do to coffee on the stove an orchards view a dog barks I kiss you on the lips I have waited all my life for this

No stone left I haven't turned but one, everyone falls in love who does and I hear you say the bus is going to come Radio play surf and sun for everyone and I wake up the pillow's wet for you and Santa Cruz

I can't tell you where my years have gone, in a trailer in a dry wash singing songs. Plane over the bay fly to L.A. look down at the half-inch hills and you Ride a bike up the Empire Grade see red earth on a bulldozer blade Live our hopes on the slope down to town that light as birds, our kids fly feet on the ground

No stone left I haven't turned but one, everyone falls in love who does and I hear you say the bus is going to come, radio play surf and sun for everyone. I hear you say the bus is going to come, radio play surf and sun for everyone, surf and sun for everyone, sky and sea and peace and love, surf and sun for everyone. And I wake up the pillow's wet for you and Santa Cruz

Soledad

plus MP3 file

Along the highway, Soledad, between here and forever a poplar tree in evening wind sways leaves dancing with questions, turning light, dark, this way, that, asking in the tawny grass. Lay beside me in gold and red til the headlights go to sleep in Soledad

Globe of glass among the others, shining, touched with gold and red among the dark evergreen branches, silver rivers of a girl's hair. You know how our faces swim there like they did when we were kids in the soft roundness of the light, leaping, calling, hey mom dad I'm Soledad

Hold me close in all our moments that vanish in a gust, come back in other eyes, other breaths, as you sway in the evening wind. Kiss me in showers of poplar leaves turning, light, dark, this way, that, asking where do we go from here as you rise and ache with Yes's of Soledad

Love Will Befall You

plus MP3 file

Lift your head off the pillow, let your hair tumble down shake yourself like a willow, and unbutton your gown and love will befall you. For we have found the glory, take my seed: we've been sown and love will befall you as you rest in my home

Kiss me slow now my darling, hold me close, hold me tight, close your eyes and keep smiling in the dark of the night for love will befall you. When you rise in the new day you'll be strong, you'll have grown and love will befall you as you rest in my home

You have sweated in the dungeons, worn the gear, swung the whip, known and owned and been thrown by the horse of the hip, and love will befall you. It was all just to come here on the path that's been shown and love will befall you as you rest in my home

I've hocked my mind in strange fingers on sunset boulevard, danced so fine with the swingers and got my forehead all scarred but love will befall you. It was all for the best thing that I ever ever have known, and love will befall you as you rest in my home

Sea and Sky Children

plus MP3 file

Sea and sky children in our boat upon blue bay, we're here to love you and we'll give you this. Wings across the meadow into the redwood trees, all the life of this land yours to touch and be

Sea and sky children in our boat across blue bay, we're here to row you and we'll give you this. April in your season, and Robin on the hill, me and Cat in her gingham dress kiss next to the well

Needle found in the haystack, sun kiss is in your cup. Black leather hearts are gold, for you we open up. The Gingham Girl will take you on her horse today along Cedar Creek in the shade to wade and play

Sunlight Stealing

plus MP3 file

I've got no land but where I stand on a sunny day glad with weeping. I've got no love to lie with me, just the bed on which I'm sleeping. I'm out today on streets so clear with light, they shine like babies and those who pass these rain-dried eyes they too look filled with maybes Ah

And the sun pours down like it knows I need to be bathed in light that warms the sea without end, and the billion questions nesting in the wires cast their shadows and whisper Hey old friend: When are you going to answer me, when are you going to answer me, when are we going to be together? You want to live in the country but it will never be closer than under your feet forever.

And the reason why I tell you this is to fly with you to kiss beyond this feeling, that some of us get to own, and some of us get to have know the look of sunlight stealing.

Spiderfly

plus MP3 file

I'm casting my nets very wide, but I only insist on a certain fly. If I tell you in my kitchen, I care for a spider, bleeds in her web for my cigarette lighter, do you think I just want to come inside her? I just might suck you and pump you with my genes, but I say Let's breed a spiderfly, think of what that means.

Whispers in Grass

plus MP3 file

Whispers in grass are the voice of my seasons, here on the hillside the wind's in your hair. Feel your heart beating as I give my reasons, kiss me and tell me that love's what you dare. We're talking cool, the leaves sparkle with jewels you call me a fool and you say I know who'll kiss me and tell me that love's what you dare.

Far down the hill in the lines of erosion, you lose your legs as a voice calls you fair now nervous you say I feel tossed on the ocean, kiss me and tell me that love's what you dare. Wind's blowing fast and the sun shadows pass, do I hear you call in the whispers in grass kiss me and tell me that love's what you dare

The Bridge

plus MP3 file

Catherine tara come take my hand and ride with me out along the ridge be my wild rose where the north wind blows by the hugging tree, where we cross the bridge. It’s dark in the cavern of fable and I blew my lines with you at the cocktail table.

You say Darling, you should know there’s a knitting needle inside my rose, and I say that’s fine my wild rose cuz there’s a silver coffin inside my clothes, with the book of the black situation the subway grotto boys boxed me in at the station. And my first face tore off in the lid as they slid back the sky so satellite eyes find the one who’s kind learns not to mind the taste bud eyes, when all the world’s a meal, the world gets so hungry oh.

& you say, Dead boy I'll lay your head outside these walls of lead, why not hold me instead past the colors we bled painting so slow on the bed.

Beautiful --- beautiful

Beautiful girl, beautiful girl, come ride with me on the ridge, Catherine tara Catherine tara Catherine tara Catherine tara come ride with me on the ridge, Come ride come ride come ride with me til we cross the bridge.

The Beautifull Place

plus MP3 file

Standing by the road our lives for rent, I'm finally connecting with you in the wind and I smell the wish fresh on your skin, I feel your strength coming through your clothes, your hair’s in the sun, your hands in my coat. We’ll stay with friends tonight, tomorrow we'll start a new life in The Beautifull Place.

I had a friend who grew hard & strange we called him Tough the Thinker, god damn before he died to me the times we spent here, laughing in the sun Aren’t you glad we’ve come? YES --blackberries in the broken fence along the road, up to the university of kind souls where the green hills sweep up to the the redwoods, down to the bay in The Beautifull Place.

I worked in the city, you had moved on, I tasted the faces in the dark clubs, kissing thirsty for the river inside. Well I wet my lips, but I never could find The Beautifull Place.

Now you give me strength, cuz you know we’ll find our place in the meadow where the highway cuts every time. I’ve got no car, as I hold you in black in the golden grass, under the overpass, standing with me, you stick out my thumb and i kiss your shoulders bare, who sees us? You don’t care, in The Beautifull Place.

Now The Beautifull Place has grown strange to itself, nothing to go back to that doesn’t sit withering on the shelf. And you know the strangeness of all things passing by, while all that they mean slips & can’t hold inside. Cuz the change gene’s been marketed, and the market rules for the people we fight in The Beautifull Place.

In The Beautifull Place the hot new thinker they call il Prodigy drives his lexus by to make this his colony. From off our backs, he’ll take all we see -- Tries to look through me, and his windshield breaks. You say fuck that shit as he crashes & burns.

I say, It’s all right now, we can get past the turns -- I can get from this crash in sight to where my heart beats ahead, took me awhile to find my way to where your heart beats ahead, well it took me so long but I’m gonna stay now where our hearts beat ahead, our hearts beat ahead. Where you have always known we can make our home among the living dead in The Beautifull Place.

Standing by the road our lives for rent, I'm finally connecting with you in the wind

The Tenants

plus MP3 file

Tales of twelve cities in our rented room Jane you’re my lady your heart stays in bloom We tend our garden our friends come to find this land is ours from the inside.

We are the tenants, the seasons are our home, holy with all things, our feet are all we own & we’re sick of being told move on, this property’s been sold. And it’s all right to live light on the earth cuz no banker, no landlord, no cop can tell you: It’s all right to live light on the earth cuz no banker, no landlord, no cop can tell you your rights of birth! When you love our family and our home.

Walked from ben lomond, hitched to soquel, slept in orchards, seeing santa cruz in the hills. Making our home from the inside, finding our way, my Jane Charge, as we ride.

Crossed a dying meadow, concrete plant ahead, sun's at our backs, The earth’s in cracks, you said. And you know how they say a bird’s feathers once were scales.

Well one grass blade’s a sword, but you may sleep in a field, and first people lived by taking & selling, and what then? And you know how people say This bird’s feathers are for sale.

In la honda, laid ourselves to sleep among trunks & stars so deep, making our home from the inside, finding our way, my Jane Charge, as we ride ride as we ride. O!

You know how children pray to the night, If I die before I wake, I pray my soul will fly to join the greater life and you say Hold me and we fell through the branches. Toward the center of the land.

In blackberry season I taste your dark heat. They’d stripmine the gold in the soles of your feet, they’d patent your eyes if they could, for how you see this land is ours from the inside. The woods once were virgin, the streams ran clear and cold when men built the roads here, but that story’s old. Jane, you’re my lady of things to unfold. This land is ours from the inside.
